| Match Report: | Honiton climbed to second position in the league with an efficient 31-6 win over Tamar Saracens on a slippery day at Allhallows. The result combined with Salcombe’s loss to Wessex sees Honiton acquire the play-off bearth for the first time this season. The mid week rain ensured that the top couple of inches of the surface were tricky, but the Lacemen knew that they had to move the opposition’s big pack around. Skipper Findlay elected to play down the slope in the first half, and having received the kick off they pressed the visitors from the off. Honiton broke into the bottom half of the field and pressured the away sides’ clearance kicks. They gained territorial advantage and a wayward kick brought Honiton’s back three into play. Canniford and Garman linked well to set the ball up on the right. Rice carried well from a forward melee to put play into clubhouse corner. Nex found Guilbert who found Sampson out wide. Sampson offloaded well to Garman who broke the gain line before finding Webber. Webber rounded off the slick move by barrelling over in the left hand corner. Webber was unlucky to see his touchline conversion sail wide. Honiton were in the ascendancy but basic unforced errors from the kick off allowed Saracens a pop at goal. The number ten knocked the ball over to see the score board click over to 5-3. Honiton responded well and better play saw Saracens concede a penalty on the twenty two. Webber converted with ease, before Honiton gave away another penalty, this time on their own ten yard line. The away sides number ten did well to convert the kick going up the hill. Honiton reacted with another Webber penalty before really taking the game by the scruff of the neck. A rolling maul down the right moved in field to the fifteen yard line and provided Nex with the chance to dive down the blind. He did so with great success as he evaded the cover tackles to score in Clubhouse corner. Webber converted well from out wide, to carry the score to 18-6. Better things were to come for the Lacemen as Canniford made great yards down the right. From the ruck Guilbert put Steggall through a gap in the midfield and the hooker made excellent yards, breaking several tackles before being hauled down five yards short. First-rate support play ensured quick ball and Nex and Barrett created space for Sampson who hit the gap on the outside to crash over in the right hand corner for an unconverted score. With the score at 23-6 at half time Honiton had done well. During the second half Honiton continued to play well without scoring as many points. Tamar Saracens pack came into the game more, and Honiton struggled a little at the scrummage. As it was, Saracens had a bit more ball and from a foray down the right they elected to kick across the field to their left winger. The kick was a poor one and Canniford and Nex hassled the winger who dropped the ball. Nex gathered and played a nice one two with Steggall (what was he doing there?) before cantering in from twenty five yards for his fourth try in two weeks. Webber missed the conversion. Honiton defended well again this week and ensured that they did not allow Saracens to cross their line. In the last five minutes Honiton won a penalty on the Saracens ten yard line on the right hand side of the field. Captain Findlay asked Webber to have a look at it, and he duly kicked the ball over the posts, in probably one of the best kicks this reporter has seen at Allhallows. All in all it was a workman like performance from the Lacemen, with many positives to take out of the game. The unforced errors and penalty count was low, the play was expansive and direct for much of the game, and the defence worked well. There was also telling contributions from Lane, deputising on the flank for injured club captain Hannay, Steggall and Nex. |
| Team Details: | Honiton face Tarmar Saracens at Allhallows on Saturday as they look to real in second placed Salcombe. Salcombe lie in second by virtue of the fact they have played more games than the Lacemen. Should the Lacemen maintain their winning ways they will overtake Salcombe, but it’s essential that they do so as other teams are not too far away. There is no doubt that Tamar Saracens will provide a more physical opposition than the Lacemen have faced in the last two weeks. They are well known for having a physical pack and Honiton must compete in that element of the game to ensure they get enough decent ball for the gas merchants out wide. Training, were you there? Should you have been there? You know who you are. You wanna play, get your arses to training please. There’s some nice stuff going on at training these days, and it ain’t cold any more so get yourself out and about. Right, Team News Locke is fit again so starts in the front row with Steggall and Huskins. Doidge and Skipper Findlay are in the second row. Club Captain Hannay injured himself last week and so Owen steps in at six, with Spiller at seven and Rice at eight. Nex and Guilbert do the shouting from nine and ten. De Large has a week off and so Barrett steps in at twelve with Sampson at outside. Canniford and Webber are on the wings with Garmen stepping in at full back as Rice Jnr Jnr goes back to the colts for their big game up north. Dobson is on the bench with Pavey and Lane. Wos on Enjoy the tunes from earlier in the week? Maybe, maybe not. This weeks big hand goes to Roy Hodgson. Beating Juve is hell of a result. I just can’t get my head around it. Awesome. Did anyone see that Dempsey chip? I scored a goal like that once, then I woke up. Talking of class, went to see city mid week for the goal fest that was the 1-0 home win against Bristol Rovers. Soooo good for letting out mid week anger. Just shouting COME ON CITY as loud as possible. ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! Oh hello, you're early.
