| Match Report: | Honiton overwhelmed Plymouth Barbarians in a pulsating first half to cement their league position. The first half saw Honiton use the elements and running rugby to break down the hosts and score 39 unanswered points. Honiton received the kick off in bright sunshine and started well, with the forwards prompt and efficient at the ruck area Guilbert used the platform to ensure that the game was played in the right areas. Honiton knew that with a back three of Webber, Canniford and Dobson running the ball wide would be the best tactic, especially with the size of the home pack. Within the first five minutes Honiton won a penalty which Webber converted, and further pressure from the kick off saw the Honiton pack move swiftly down the left. As the ball was spun to the right De Large collected the ball at pace and broke the gain line ten yards out. He stepped the full back convincingly to dot down under the posts for a converted score. By this stage Honiton were winning the kicking exchanges with some ease. One wondered why the home side kicked the ball away so frequently; but when the results were so positive for the Lacemen, one did not ponder too long. Honiton won a scrumage against the head in the Baa Baa’s twenty two. Skipper Hannay picked up and drove to within two yards, Nex found Guilbert who drew the defence before slipping a pass to De Large who crossed from three yards for another converted score. Honiton again worked well from the restart; Rice picked from the base of a ruck and made excellent yards, breaking several tackles, pumping his legs and fending off defenders. Dobson made himself available on the right wing and Rice threw a superb twenty metre pass on the move. Dobson used his pace to finish off in the bottom right hand corner. Honiton kicked a penalty shortly afterwards through Webber, and from the kick off the Lacemen produced their most clinical move of the match. After securing the restart they flung the ball wide to Canniford, he showed good pace and safe hands to put Webber down the wing. Webber made forty yards before cutting infield and offloading back to Canniford who put Sampson in to finish a flowing move. Webber added the extras. The final try of the half came as Honiton marched down the left with several phases before spinning the ball to the midfield. De Large found Dobson and Hannay on the wing with a clever chip and Hannay gathered to bundle over from ten yards out. Honiton were satisfied with their work at half time and knew that more of the same was required for the second period. It was a slightly different story however as the home side outscored the Lacemen by three tries to one in the second half. Honiton scored first in the second period as a scrummage saw the play go up the blind and from a ruck which Dobson created the play moved to the left where Sampson made an excellent line break. He was tapped tackled and stopped just short, from the ruck Honiton were awarded a penalty, which they tapped and moved right. The yield was another penalty five yards out, where the forwards used a training ground move to score through Rice, converted by Webber. Honiton switched off in the last quarter and the home side grew in stature, using their large runners to make holes. Honiton’s defence will be the subject of some scrutiny this week at training as they consistently allowed the runners to come to the gain line. They will certainly need to be more proactive in their defence over the next few weeks, but all in all it was a fantastic result for the side and the first 65 minutes was dominated by the Lacemen. Hows everyone after the weekend? Yeah baby. All good. Anywho, what the hell is going on with this damn league? Man it is sooo bad. A quick update from JR. Basically Plymouth Argum have been kicked out of the promotion league. Therefore the points we gained from the walkovers have been removed, and our second place is not safe unless we win in Plymouth on Saturday. Good news is that in theory we could catch Totnes for automatic promotion and win the league. It could happen. Fixture congestion is a bit ruddy ripe at the moment. It could be that we have to go to Plymouth mid week. Ouch! But I’m game, let’s take it to ‘em. They won’t like it up ‘em. Janners. So, we are playing Plymouth Barbarians on Saturday down there. You may remember that we drew down there last year, so we need to sort that out. The grounds getting harder, so let’s run them around and use the gas merchants. Get the mind set right from the off. They’ll be a good side down there. Reasonable training boys but we need more numbers. Team News Harrison, Steggal and Owen are in the front row with Doidge and Findlay in the engine room. Jones joins the back row at six with Skipper Hannay at seven. Rice is at number eight with Nex at nine. Guilbert is at fly half, with Vice Captain De Large at inside centre. Sampson is at outside with Webber on wing. Dobson is on the other with Canniford at the back. Phil "the power" Pavey is on the bench with Barrett and Cooke. Wos On It’s election time, and I’m sure there will be a great deal of election related Wos on’s in the build up, but I just wanted to let everyone know now I’m very much enjoying giving Hugo Swire the finger on my way to and from work. I look forward to the journey now. You’ll never take me alive Swire. What have you done for the last four years other than wash and go that barnet? Seriously though, I genuinely don’t know. A big hand to whoever drew the tash on him at Daisy Mount A30 east bound. Lovin’ that .....I saw that as well really made me laugh....there is another poster of him a bit further on....how about a stop on a dark night and someone drawing a male member coming out of his forehead!! It's not political, it's just to cheer people up on thier return from work. You can but laugh if you saw a tash on the first then the knob on the second....just a public "cheer everyone up" policy. By the by How does a sickly picture of a bloke make you vote for him? Arrogant tw** |
